When temperatures rise, Brazil turns to Café Gelado – a creamy, iced coffee refined with condensed milk. This drink is equally popular in Brazilian cafés and households alike and can be prepared in just a few minutes. The result: a velvety iced coffee with an intense coffee aroma and a natural sweetness that perfectly matches Brazilian coffee culture.
Ingredients (for 2 people)
- 4 tbsp ground Brazilian coffee (e.g., Café Pilão roasted & ground)
- 200 ml hot water
- 4 tbsp condensed milk (sweetened)
- 200 ml whole milk (cold)
- 8–10 ice cubes
Preparation
- Brew the coffee with the hot water to double strength – the coffee must be strong, as it will be diluted by the ice later.
- Stir the hot coffee together with the condensed milk and let it cool down completely (preferably for 15–20 minutes in the refrigerator).
- Place ice cubes into two tall glasses.
- Pour the cooled coffee over the ice.
- Add the cold whole milk, stir briefly, and serve immediately.
Tips
- Even creamier: Blend the coffee and condensed milk with ice in a blender – this creates an almost milkshake-like consistency.
- Faster version: If you are in a hurry, you can also use Café Pilão Solúvel instant coffee – simply dissolve it in cold water and pour directly over ice.
- Without condensed milk: If you prefer less sweetness, replace the condensed milk with regular milk and a teaspoon of sugar.
