Passion Fruit Caipi – the modern Caipirinha twist
The classic Caipirinha is Brazil’s most famous cocktail – lime, sugar, cachaça, done. But what if you upgrade the original with tropical passion fruit? The result is a fruity, exotic drink that is just as easy to prepare and brings even more summer into your glass. You can find all recipes related to Brazilian cuisine and drinks in our recipe blog.
Ingredients (for 1 person)
- 5 cl Brazilian cachaça (e.g., Cachaça 51 or Delicana Silver 44°)
- ½ ripe passion fruit
- ½ lime
- 2 tsp cane sugar (or to taste)
- Crushed ice
- Optional: A splash of passion fruit juice for extra fruitiness – e.g., using passion fruit juice concentrate
Preparation
- Prepare the lime: Cut the half lime into 4 pieces and place them in a glass (Old Fashioned or tumbler).
- Add passion fruit: Scoop the pulp of the half passion fruit directly into the glass.
- Sweeten: Add 2 tsp of cane sugar over the lime and passion fruit.
- Muddle: Firmly crush everything using a Caipirinha muddler (or the back of a spoon) so the juices are released and combine with the sugar.
- Ice and cachaça: Fill the glass with crushed ice and pour 5 cl of cachaça over it.
- Stir and serve: Stir briefly, optionally garnish with a passion fruit half, and enjoy immediately.
Tips for the perfect Passion Fruit Caipi
- Cachaça quality matters: A good Brazilian cachaça makes all the difference. The higher the quality, the smoother the taste.
- Cane sugar instead of white sugar: Cane sugar gives the drink a slight caramel note that pairs perfectly with passion fruit.
- Choose a ripe passion fruit: The riper the fruit, the more intense the aroma. The skin can be slightly wrinkled – that is a sign of ripeness.
- Crushed ice is a must: Standard ice cubes work, but crushed ice cools faster and gives the drink the right consistency.
Variations
Want to experiment even more? Here are a few ideas:
- Passion Fruit Mint Caipi: Muddle a few fresh mint leaves for a refreshing herbal note.
- Spicy-sweet: Add a thin slice of fresh chili – the contrast with the sweet passion fruit is surprisingly good.
- Alcohol-free: Replace the cachaça with coconut water or passion fruit juice for a virgin version.
Why cachaça and not rum?
Cachaça is distilled directly from freshly pressed sugar cane juice – unlike rum, which is usually made from molasses. This gives cachaça its characteristic, slightly grassy and fresh taste, which harmonizes perfectly with tropical fruits like passion fruit. Authentic Brazilian cachaça is the centerpiece of every genuine Caipirinha. Find out more in our guide Cachaça vs. Rum.
Looking for the right cachaça? Our recommendation: Cachaça Delicana Silver 44° – fresh, clear, and perfect for modern cocktails. You can find all varieties in our cachaça collection.
